Pakistan suspected of retaliating after US raid

ISLAMABAD – Suspicion rose Monday that Cheap Air Max Pakistan's intelligence service leaked the name of the CIA chief in Islamabad to local media in anger over the raid that killed Osama bin Laden — the second outing of an American covert operative here in six months. The U.S. said it has no plans to pull the spy chief, but the incident is likely to exacerbate an already troubled relationship between the two countries a week after Navy SEALs in helicopters swooped down on bin Laden's compound without first telling the Pakistanis. The CIA and Pakistan's spy agency have long viewed each other with suspicion, which the death of the terror leader has laid bare. The Pakistani military and intelligence services have suffered withering criticism at home for failing to stop the U.S. operation. Many Pakistanis view the raid as a violation of their sovereignty — even if they were pleased that bin Laden was killed. U.S. officials have said they didn't tell Pakistanis in advance because they were worried someone might tip off bin Laden. American forces also used helicopters with radar-evading technology so the Pakistanis couldn't track them. Pakistani Prime Minister Yousuf Raza Gilani defended the military and intelligence services Monday, telling parliament it was "disingenuous for anyone to blame Pakistan ... for being in cahoots with al-Qaida." He acknowledged his nation's failure to track bin Laden but said the failure wasn't Pakistan's alone. "Yes, there has been an intelligence failure," Gilani said. "It is not only ours but of all the intelligence agencies of the world." U.S. officials have said they see no evidence that anyone in the upper echelons of Pakistan's military and intelligence establishment was complicit in hiding bin Laden in Abbottabad, an army town only 35 miles from the capital. But suspicions remain, and members of Congress have threatened to cut off U.S. aid if evidence is found. President Barack Obama said the U.S. believes bin Laden must have had a support network inside Pakistan. "But we don't know who or what that support network was," Obama said in Dior pens an interview broadcast Sunday on CBS' "60 Minutes." "We don't know whether there might have been some people inside of government, people outside of government, and that's something that we have to investigate, and more importantly, the Pakistani government has to investigate." Steelers vets show Super Bowl ropes to new players

PITTSBURGH (AP)—The Pittsburgh Steelers are 2010 jerseys back in the Super Bowl again— thanks to a few new faces. Veteran receiver Hines Ward(notes) will be there the next couple weeks to ensure things go smoothly after a 24-19 win Sunday night over the New York Jets to claim the AFC title put the Steelers in the Super Bowl on Feb. 6 in Dallas against the Green Bay Packers. “A lot of our key guys who have been making plays throughout the whole year have never been to the Super Bowl,” said Ward, a 13-year veteran. “I am pretty sure that the guys will have lot of anxiety. It sure didn’t look as if running back Rashard Mendenhall(notes) and rookie receiver Antonio Brown(notes) had butterflies on the chilly turf at Heinz Field. It is Mendenhall’s third season, but his first trip to the Super Bowl after missing the Steelers’ 2009 win over the Arizona Cardinals due to an injured shoulder. He ran for 121 yards on 27 carries and a touchdown against the Jets, with 95 yards in a dominating first half. “It means a lot to be here and to be going to Dallas with these men, especially not having the opportunity the first time,” Mendenhall said. “It means so much for this city, and to be a part of it is just an awesome feeling.” Brown had just one catch—but it was huge. The 14-yard discount ugg boots completion from a scrambling Ben Roethlisberger(notes) on third-and-6 finally turned aside the surging Jets with less than two minutes left after New York nearly overcame a 21-point halftime deficit. Roethlisberger was vintage, scrambling out of the pocket, rolling right and eluding two more defenders before finding Brown. “It was a really, really tight window in order to get it to Hines. My thought was let’s try and run it. I started running to the sideline and next thing you know, A.B. comes flying across the field. He beat them with speed,” Roethlisberger said. Just like in the playoff win vs. the Ravens, when his creative 58-yard reception on 3rd and 19 set up Pittsburgh’s winning touchdown. Throw in second-year man Mike Wallace(notes) and rookie Emmanuel Sanders(notes) and the Steelers have a veritable youth movement going at receiver. To Big Ben, it just doesn’t matter who’s catching the passes. “I have the same amount of confidence in all of them” Roethlisberger said. “It speaks volumes for the way that they work.” He finished 10 of 19 passing for 133 yards and two interceptions, though his mobility did give the Jets trouble much of the night. He had 11 carries for 21 yards and a 2-yard scramble into the end zone to give the Steelers a 17-0 lead midway through the second quarter. But things got dicey for Pittsburgh after halftime. The Jets defense pitched a second-half shutout on what had been a dominating Steelers offense. Pittsburgh controlled the line of scrimmage in the first half, even after rookie center Maurkice Pouncey(notes) left with a sprained left ankle. Pouncey was on crutches after the game with his left Air Max 87 ankle wrapped. He was replaced by Doug Legursky(notes). “I am sure we will have more information that will be debated here in the next couple of weeks. But it’s a great debate to have, isn’t it?” coach Mike Tomlin said. New York stiffened against the run after halftime. Roethlisberger was tackled for a safety after a bad snap exchange at the 1 with 7:38 left. “We shot ourselves in the foot with mental errors. We jumped out on them so early … some of the guys may have lowered some of their energy a little bit,” receiver Ward said. On the next drive, Jerricho Cotchery’s(notes) 4-yard TD catch cut the lead to five, and the Jets kicked the ball back to the Steelers hoping for a big defensive stand. It wasn’t to be, not with Roethlisberger at the controls. He connected with Miller for a first down on a 14-yard completion on second-and-9. The Steelers gained just four yards on the next two plays, both runs. Then, Roethlisberger’s last pass turned out to be the most important of the night, to the rookie Brown. “We weren’t going to play not to lose,” Tomlin said Air jordan 3.5 about throwing on the final drive.

Federer in a hurry in 1st round at Australian Open

LBOURNE, Australia (AP)—Roger Federer air maxes didn’t waste any time Monday at the Australian Open, winning his opening match by playing like a man who doesn’t want his remarkable 7 1/2-year run of success in Grand Slams to end. Federer was rarely troubled in beating Lukas Lacko of Slovakia 6-1, 6-1, 6-3 in 84 minutes on the first day at Melbourne Park, barely waiting for ballboys and ballgirls to get back to their positions before serving. The win came at Rod Laver Arena, a stadium named after the player who Federer’s main rival here— Rafael Nadal—is trying to emulate. Nadal has won three majors in a row—last year’s French Open, Wimbledon and U.S. Open. So unless Federer can win the final on Jan. 30, it will be the first time since winning Wimbledon in 2003 that the Swiss star hasn’t held at least one major title. His 24-year-old Spanish rival is trying to make it four in a row and complete his “Rafa Slam.” Laver won all four in 1969, a true calendar year Grand Slam. “I tried to play offensive from the start and see where it takes me,” Federer said after his easy victory over Lacko. “I was able to keep on pressing, put him on cheap ugg boots the back foot. I was really happy I chose that tactic early on to pressure him.” Andy Roddick was rarely under pressure in his 6-1, 6-2, 6-2 win Jan Hajek of the Czech Republic. The eighth-seeded American is trying to end a Grand Slam drought. His one and only major came at the 2003 U.S. Open. “I had a good off season,” Roddick said. “I feel healthy and strong for the first time in a while. I certainly feel like I’m prepared.” Two other American men had contrasting fortunes in five-setters—No. 18 Sam Querrey lost to Lukasz Kubot of Poland 5-7, 6-2, 3-6, 6-1, 8-6, while 16th-seeded Mardy Fish came back from two sets down to beat Victor Hanescu of Romania 2-6, 4-6, 6-3, 7-5, 6-3. “I’ve never come back from two sets to love before (and) I’ve had a long career,” Fish said. “I’ve played a lot of five-set matches, it certainly was on my mind.” No. 23 Nikolay Davydenko, a quarterfinalist last year, lost 6-3, 4-6, 7-6 (4), 6-4 to Florian Mayer. Former world junior champion Thiemo De Bakker served for the match at 5-3 in the third against 12th-seeded Gael Monfils but lost 6-7 (5), 2-6, 7-5, 6-2, 6-1. In other men’s results, sixth-seeded Tomas Berdych, who lost the last Wimbledon final to Nadal, beat Marco Crugnola of Italy 6-4, 6-0, 6-2, and 28th-seeded Richard Gasquet of Red Monkey jeans France defeated Canadian qualifier Frank Dancevic 6-3, 6-4, 6-4. Gilles Simon of France beat Lu Yen-hsun of Taiwan 6-7 (3), 6-2, 6-4, 6-2 and will next face Federer. Simon is one of the few players on tour to hold a winning record against Federer, winning both previous meetings on hard courts in 2008. “Maybe I will look just a bit more into what has worked and what has not worked against him (Simon) in the past,” Federer said. Ninth-seeded Fernando Verdasco, who made an impressive run to the semifinals in Melbourne two years ago, beat Rainer Schuettler of Germany 6-1, 6-3, 6-2 and No. 17 Ivan Ljubicic of Croatia defeated Australian wild card entry Peter Luczak 6-3, 6-3, 7-6 (2). Caroline Wozniacki started her first major as the No. 1-ranked woman with a 6-3, 6-4 victory over Argentina’s Gisela Dulko. It was 20-year-old Wozniacki’s first official tournament win of the year, following a straight-sets loss to Slovakia’s Dominika Cibulkova last week at the Sydney International and exhibition losses to No. 2 Vera Zvonareva and Kim Clijsters. Wozniacki won six tournaments in 2010, including four of her last six. Fifth-seeded Venus Williams advanced after beating Sara Errani of Italy 6-3, 6-2. The American star is the only Williams sister in the draw this year after defending Timberland shoes high champion Serena withdrew because of a foot injury. Justine Henin overcame a slow start to beat Indian qualifier Sania Mirza 5-7, 6-3, 6-1. Henin, who lost the 2010 Australian final to Serena Williams just weeks into a comeback to the tour from retirement, had one set point in the first, but allowed Mirza to break her service, then win the next two games to take the set. The seven-time Grand Slam winner said it was a difficult match—“even if I wasn’t at my best, I was fighting at every point.” Maria Sharapova won for the first time at Melbourne Park since taking the 2008 title, beating Thai veteran Tamarine Tanasugarn 6-1, 6-3 in the opening match on Rod Laver Arena. Sharapova, who missed the 2009 tournament because of a shoulder injury and was ousted in the first round last year by fellow Russian Maria Kirilenko, struggled with her winter boots 5760 serve and was inconsistent in the second set. She finished with 10 double-faults and five aces. After losing the opening service game at love, Sharapova won seven straight games to take a 6-1, 1-0 lead. “I was definitely a little bit nervous in the beginning. Last year, I played first match on center and I lost,” she said. “Kind of was like, ‘I don’t want this to happen again this year.’ French Open champion Francesca Schiavone had difficulty in her first match, beating Arantxa Parra Santonja of Spain 6-7 (4), 6-2, 6-4. In other women’s matches, last year’s semifinalist Li Na of China had a 6-1, 7-5 win over Sweden’s Sofia Arvidsson and No. 15 Marion Bartoli of France shut out Italy’s Tathiana Garbin 6-0, 6-0. No. 20 Kaia Kanepi of Estonia and No. 29 Dominika Cibulkova of Air Max 87 Slovakia advanced, along with No. 30 Andrea Petkovic, who beat American Jill Craybas 6-1, 6-2.

Downhill racer Nyman senses US history in Wengen

WENGEN, Switzerland (AP)—Downhill racer Cheap Nike Shox Steven Nyman will be aiming to extend a great American tradition when he takes on the historic Lauberhorn course on Saturday. It was at Wengen a generation ago, on Jan. 15, 1984, that the United States got its first men’s World Cup downhill win when Bill Johnson tamed the long, quirky track that twists beneath the Eiger and Jungfrau mountain peaks. Nyman has also been inspired by the Wengen victories by Daron Rahlves and Bode Miller, his former and current teammates. “The runs that those guys put down a few years ago were inspiring,” Nyman said Thursday. “Just so gut-wrenching and intense, how hard they were pushing the whole way down. “My first World Cup year was the year Daron won and it blew my mind,” the 28-year-old Sundance, Utah, native said. That success for Rahlves in 2006, 11 years after fellow Californian Kyle Rasmussen made Wengen his first career win, started a three-year stretch of U.S. dominance. Miller delivered back-to-back in 2008 and ’09. When he was denied a hat-trick by Switzerland’s Didier Defago, another Californian teammate Marco Sullivan was third. One of many Wengen traditions sees podium finishers ferried by helicopter down to the village for a press conference in an elementary school classroom. “I want that helicopter ride at the end,” said Nyman, who was fifth fastest in a final training run on Wednesday. Miller was 14th. The longest World Cup downhill—4.43 kilometers (2.75 miles) this year— includes the tour’s fastest and slowest sections on a 2- 1/2 minute journey. Racers hit 140 kph (87 mph) on the Haneggschuss straight having earlier slammed on the brakes to steer through an S-bend and emerge at 70kph (44 mph). They hurtle off the signature Hundschopf cliff uggs sale jump, negotiate one passage that’s just 10 foot wide and pass through a low tunnel bridge carrying the cog railway trains which take them to the start. “In between every section you have time to think and feel,” Nyman said. “It’s super intense, then a walk in the park. There’s a lot of thinking time.” The Lauberhorn was “designed by nature,” said Michael Walchhofer, the Austrian veteran who leads the season-long downhill standings. “If you wanted to design a new course like that, it could not happen,” said Walchhofer, who won in 2005 when Miller was third. Walchhofer, at 35, is in his farewell season while old rival Didier Cuche— twice runner-up to Miller—appears set to return next year. Cuche, 36, would be a hugely popular winner if he can give the knowledgeable Swiss crowd a third straight home success. Defending Lauberhorn champion Carlo Janka feels he’s an outside bet to repeat. “Maybe I don’t have the same confidence like last year,” said Janka, who is winless in defense of his World Cup overall title. The home team also looks to all-rounder Silvan Zurbriggen, the surprise downhill winner at Val Gardena, Italy, having a career-best year at 29. Zurbriggen is perhaps better suited to the super-combined which opened the program Friday, having finished third three times including last year behind Miller. On the eve of the 81st Lauberhorn meeting, the 28-year-old Nyman keenly felt the sense of history. His fellow Sundance resident Robert Redford filmed scenes in Wengen for Air Yeeyz Shoes skiing’s all-time classic movie more than 40 years ago. “I’ve watched ‘Downhill Racer’ in the past and it was filmed here in this hotel,” said Nyman, speaking in the lobby of the Beausite Park where the U.S. team stays. “There’s an intensity here.”

Fredette scores 47 to lead No. 11 BYU past Utah

SALT LAKE CITY (AP)—Jimmer Fredette took uggs 2010 some razzing Tuesday night for his missed dunk. That was his only mistake in a game where he scored 47 points as No. 11 BYU cruised to a 104-79 victory over Utah. “When he starts to shoot from 40 feet out you know he’s feeling something,” Cougars teammate Jackson Emery said of Fredette, who hit a 40-foot buzzer-beater before halftime and a few other 3s that would have been good down the street where the Utah Jazz play. “You kind of wanted to keep giving him the ball.” Fredette finished 6 of 9 on 3-pointers, 9 of 9 on free throws and 16 of 28 overall for BYU (17-1, 3-0 Mountain West). The BYU fans who made the 50-mile drive from Provo wanted 50 from the preseason All-America guard, and chanted his name when coach Dave Rose pulled him from the game with 5:44 left. Rose would reinsert Fredette to stop a short Utah run 90 seconds later, and Fredette added two free throws to finish two points shy of the school-record 49 he scored last season at Arizona. While Rose insisted he didn’t know how many points Fredette had, Fredette did. “Of course. I won’t lie to you,” Fredette said when asked if he wanted 50. “It was Coach’s decision. The most important thing is that we won. It was a great night anyway.” The game was BYU’s last at Utah as members of the Mountain West Conference. Utah jumps to the Pac-12 next year and the Cougars move to the West Coast Conference. “Tonight was very similar to the game at Arizona,” Rose said. “(Fredette) still had six assists. He was still sharing the ball. He didn’t force a lot of things, but he ED hardy clothes got himself good looks and converted on them.” The buzzer-beater gave Fredette 32 points in the first half and moved him past BYU great Danny Ainge in career 30-point games with 13. He trails only Michael Smith and Devin Durant, who had 17 apiece to top the Cougar record books. Ainge’s 30-year-old steals record would fall at the 12:47 mark of the first half when Emery grabbed the ball from Utah freshman J.J. O’Brien then passed ahead to Fredette for a layup. He entered the game with 195 steals and tied with Ainge, who set the mark in 1981. “That’s fantastic. I’m happy for him,” said Ainge, the Boston Celtics general manager who was taping BYU’s game while attending Tuesday night’s Boston College-North Carolina State matchup. Emery had two steals Tuesday and has 197. “It feels good to finally get that,” said Emery, who finished with 20 points and hit 5 of 7 3-pointers. “That last one seems to have been the hardest one,” Rose said of the steals record. “I’m happy it’s over and he won’t get asked about it any more.” Utah (7-10, 0-3) came out determined to match BYU’s intensity in an attempt to halt a six-game losing streak. The Utes led 15-10 and 23-19, and tried to push the pace. The Cougars got some stops, then followed with a barrage of 3-pointers. A 3 by Emery pulled BYU within 23-22, and Fredette hit consecutive shots from beyond the arc for a 28-25 BYU lead. Fredette’s three-point play with 5:12 left in the half gave Nike Dunk SB Low Shoes BYU a 38-29 lead. He hit a 3-pointer from 30 feet for a 43-33 lead, and scored BYU’s final 13 points of the half. “I just felt good right from the beginning,” said Fredette, who scored 39 points in a win at UNLV last week. “I felt like I was able to use the screen effectively and get into the lane and make some shots. Then the basket got a little bigger, especially in that first half. It was just one of those special nights that you have, that our team had, something we’ll never forget.” BYU has won four straight and eight of the last nine against Utah. The Cougars have won seven straight this season. “Heck of a player,” Utah coach Jim Boylen told Fredette afterward. Will Clyburn, who led Utah with 23 points, couldn’t argue. “Some of those shots we really couldn’t do anything about,” he said. “We’re looking forward to the next game at their place. We’re going to get them.” The Utes, who outrebounded BYU 45-30, need to finish stronger. Clyburn pulled Utah within 63-53 with a layup with 12:26 remaining, and two free throws by Josh Watkins, who had 19 points, cut it to nine points with 11:40 remaining. But Noah Hartsock hit consecutive 3-pointers to give Utah a 72-57 lead with 10:12 left and the Cougars never looked back. “It feels good,” said Fredette, who high-fived fans and Air Force Low Shoes hugged family members afterward. “That’s what you want to do as a basketball player. You want to kill your opponent.”

Soderling overpowers Roddick to win Brisbane title

SYDNEY, Jan 9 (Reuters) - Top MBT shoes seed Robin Soderling underlined his credentials as an Australian Open contender by overpowering defending champion Andy Roddick 6-3 7-5 to win the Brisbane International on Sunday. The world number five, who had not dropped a set all week and only been broken once, matched Roddick’s fiercesome service game and unleashed his deadly forehand to win his seventh professional title. The 26-year-old Swede stayed calm as Roddick raged through a delay while rainwater that had got under the roof of the Pat Rafter arena was cleared from the court and sealed his triumph with a 16th ace after an hour and a half. World number eight Roddick was always on the back foot in the contest and required a couple of aces just to win his first service game against the powerful Swede. That only delayed the inevitable and Soderling, who was running the game from the back of the court, got the break at the next attempt before racing to a 4-1 lead. Soderling, who has never been past the second round at Melbourne Park, summoned up another trio of aces to give himself set point four games later and went 1-0 up with a low crosscourt backhand that kicked off the line. “He served too well today, it seemed like any time I had a look, he came up with one of those big serves,” said Roddick. “I’m normally at the other side and it’s better on that end of the serve.” The American continued to struggle to keep his uggs 2010 serve at the start of the second set—it took him seven minutes to go 3-2 up—and the frustration boiled over when play had to be stopped. Roddick was incensed at the way umpire Fergus Murphy had tested how slippery the court was and made it quite clear he was not prepared to take any risks before the year’s first grand slam starts on Jan. 17. “I’m not going to get hurt before Melbourne,” he told Murphy. The wet weather in Queensland has left an area the size of France and Germany combined under water and Roddick after the match pledged to double his $100 per ace donation to the relief fund, boosting his contribution to $10,800. Soderling had remained in his chair with a towel over his head throughout the delay and when play resumed was quickly on the Roddick serve again, racking up his seventh, eighth and ninth break points of the match against none for his opponent. Former number one Roddick has never been one to give up, however, and he saved all three before succumbing to Soderling’s 10th break point with a netted backhand. Soderling cooly served out for victory before heading over to the stands to kiss his girlfriend and shake his new coach Claudio Pistolesi by the hand. “We’ve only worked together for a couple of weeks, this is the first tournament, and it’s working pretty well, no?” Soderling, who pocketed a cheque for $73,000, said of ED Hardy handbag Pistolesi, who replaced Magnus Norman last month.
